History

Arturo was born in Punta Arenas, Chile. Since his childhood he showed a talent for Mathematics, earning the second prize in a national competition. He is also a gifted chess player, althought he has been known for his lack of patience and reckless gameplay. He graduated in Mathematics at Santiago's University, Chile and then moved to the United States of America to pursued his master and PhD degrees in Applied Physics, at MIT. Around the same time his older brother, Diego, enlisted in Starfleet, being assigned later to a small patrol ship around Sol system and the route trades between Terra and Andoria. Althought he don't admit it, his brother's decision still have a great impact on Arturo's way of life. For a long time, he envied his brother's courage and so-to-speak "space leg".

After earning his degree, he returned to Chile to work as consultant scientist and college teacher. There, he started researching theorical and practical subspace communication. He even built himself a prototype of a subspace array from spare parts of old Starship vessels he manage to purchase, sometimes from some people outside the regular channels. Arturo Mendez's life was a good one: a good job, a nice apartment and... a beatiful girlfriend, Manuela. They meet for the first time at a conference in Brazil. At the ocasion, they argued loudly over the design of some subspace amplifier she designed. It was love at the first sight! The couple's marriage was being arranged for some time when sad news arrived to Arturo - His sweetheart Manuela, has died in an accident during the upgrade of one radio telescope in California.

Deeply disapointed, Arturo took a leave of absence at his University job and started a one-year trip around the world. He just couldn't stay in Chile no more. During his travels, he had the opportunity to go see his brother at Jupiter Station. Both spend a good time together, with Diego speaking about Starfleet with pride and joy. Arturo was then under the bitter impression that his life was meaningless, while his brother, on the other hand, was making something significant and important. Making history. Human history.

Once he went back to his parents' house, he made the shocking announcement: he enlisted in Starfleet in the pursuit of the opportunity of researching and improving the current Starfleet communication technologies. Above all, Arturo wanted to experience the daily life in space, following the steps of his older brother, and becoming part of this new and exciting chapter of Human History. "As a scientist", he said, "I can be a valuable officer". Quitting his job was in fact a bit dificult, but as soon as he realized what was going to come, Arturo couldn't do anything but smile.
