History
Officer Cadet Petr Case took a roundabout way into Starfleet service. Born in the coastal city of Victoria, British Columbia to an engineer and a mechanic, for much of his life, Petr expected to work with machines in either a civilian occupation, or as a Starfleet machinist’s mate like his older sister, Angel.
While the university engineering program included some science classes for breadth, it was his first co-op semester that inspired Petr to study biology. Though originally brought aboard the research ship SS Fassenbinder as an ROV technician and operator, Case rapidly learned about the exotic deep sea ecology that they researched. Despite a series of freak accidents, including a pair of fatalities aboard the Fassenbinder, Petr emerged enthralled by the tenacity and adaptability of life. Despite a lingering interest in engineering, the mysterious species residing in the crushing depths of the Marianas Trench, completely foreign to the surface-dwelling world, inspired Case to change his area of study to biology as he yearned to learn more about exotic life forms – Terran or otherwise.
It was the lack of knowledge about xenobiology that influenced Case to join Starfleet. Years spent with the local cadet corps has left him familiar with the layout and some of the culture of a paramilitary organization, although he has no formal military training. While weary of the Intrepid’s inauspicious past, Case is thrilled to serve aboard one his sister’s old duty postings. One remaining quirk of his engineering background is his distrust of directed energy weapons whose operating principals he doesn’t completely understand. While Petr is more comfortable with slug throwers, Starfleet issues energy weapons; a fact of life that Case accepts, if a bit reluctantly.
