Gregory James Berrenger

Gregory Berrenger is a driven, inquisitive and sincere person. Since childhood, he has been searching for his own little niche in the universe which seems as elusive to him as the mysteries of space itself. He is not one to follow the crowd, often bucking current trends to pursue his own individual tastes. His inquisitive nature has caused him to retain a cache of arcane facts that some say serve no real purpose. In uniform with his lab coat slung over his shoulders and reading glasses perched on his nose, he appears to be studious and reserved, but his daily routine includes rigorous physical exercise that keeps him in excellent physical condition.

Born 2129.11.05 to William and Elizabeth Berrenger, Greg was raised in the city of Pittsburgh located in Southwestern Pennsylvania. He is the eldest of three children. His father William was a the Dean of the School of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and his mother Elizabeth a high school English teacher. Education was very important to the Berrengers and they tried to create a home environment that fostered the educational growth of their children. Greg thrived during his early childhood and went on frequent excursions to the Carnegie Library where he could be found with his nose in a book rather than at the playground with the other children.

When Greg was a teenager, his mother was killed in a transport accident when her public transit vehicle collided with another while she was visiting her parents in Florida. With his important job at CMU, William demanded that Greg help raise his younger brother and sister. It was the beginning of a rift between father and son that would only widen with the passage of time.

It was during this same period of time that Greg became interested in the sciences such as chemistry and biology. As he excelled in such courses, he became more and more aware of his dream to one day be a doctor. His interest in good health led him to start a more rigorous exercise program to keep himself in shape although he still never passed up on a chance to read a good book.

William's marriage to Joanna only three years after Elizabeth's death did not bode well with Greg and a great deal of acrimony still exists between stepson and stepmother. Once he moved away from home, Greg avoids returning to Pittsburgh even for brief visits. Greg's announcement that he intended to pursue a career in Star Fleet was equally met with scorn and disgust by his own father who felt that private practice was much more suitable for his son.

Greg's four years at Star Fleet Academy helped reinforce his feelings of isolation from the rest of the world. With the rigors of training being as stressful and strenuous as they were, several of his friendships formed during his first year at the Academy ended abruptly when those students didn't make it past their first year. He also met Rebecca Pierce while jogging on campus one morning. Although their relationship lasted for two years and was very important to him, Rebecca eventually broke it off after deciding that they couldn't have both a career in Star Fleet and a marriage. It only contributed to Greg's feelings of ambiguity where forming long-term relationships and friendships are concerned.
